Compton's Cafeteria Riot Shirts, Hoodies and Mugs

We are raising funds for the Compton's Cafeteria Riot 50th Anniversary and the TWOC who led the way with shirts, hoodies and...coffee mugs! Why mugs? Because a cup of coffee started it all!

Legend has it that the Riot was started when a trans woman of color got fed up with the continual harassment and threw a cup of coffee into the face of oppression. So what better way to commemorate the event than with Compton's Cafeteria 50th anniversary coffee mugs?

2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, which was one of the first known instances of militant trans resistance to oppression. The 1966 Riot predates the better known Stonewall Riots by 3 years and was forgotten for many years. The 2005 documentary “Screaming Queens” brought this historic event back to general attention; the 40th anniversary in 2006 was marked by the unveiling of a plaque at Turk and Taylor, the location of the riot, commemorating the event.

In the event that we raise more than we need for the celebration, all remaining funds will be used to fund work benefiting trans people, particularly trans women of color.
