Statics provided by the National Coalition Against
Domestic Violence (www.ncadv.org/learn/statistics):
Every 9 seconds in the US, a woman is
assaulted or beaten.
On average, nearly 20 people per minute
are phyically aused by n intimate prtner in the United States. During one
year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.
1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been
victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their
lifetime.
1 in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and
90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence.
72% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner; 94% of the
victims of these murder suicides are female.
1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the United States has been raped in
their lifetime.
Texas family violence centers continue to provide lifesaving
shelter to wmen andamilie experiencing violence at the hands of their
intimate partners. In 2014, 23,311 victims of family violence sought shelter
and safety from olence at a faily violence program. The average shelter stay
lasted just over 31 days and 61,119 Texas families sought
services like advocacy and counseling rather than shelter. Shockingly, in 2013
alone, family violence centers had to turn away 31% of victims requesting
shelter, due to lack of space. According to the Texas Council on Family
Violence (tcfv.org), 132 Texas women were killed because of family violence in
2015.
According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline website (www.thehotline.org), 1 in 4 women
(24.3%) will experience domestic violence in her lifetime (1 in 7 men).
In 2015, according to the US Census, the population of Atascosa County
was 48,438 compared to 47,774 in 2014. Of this populace,
approximately 50.3% were woman. This means that potentially 7265 woman in
Atascosa County are or will be victims of severe physical
violence by an intimate partner. The Atascosa Family Crisis Center
purchased property to create the counties very first residential shelter. AFCC is transitioning from a non-resident
center to a residential crisis shelter, able to aid victims by providing temporary
residency while removing them from the hands of their aggressors.
