The 1 in 5 Project

There is no greater obstacle for women than darkness. As soon as night falls, the streets are no longer a safe place, parking garages become potential death zones, and beverages must be monitored for illicit drugs. When instances of rape and sexual violence do occur, the media consistently victimizes the rapist rather than the rape victim, placing blame on her outfit choice, demeanor, and location. The United States is in desperate need of a perspective shift.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (2010), 1 in 5 women will be raped in their lifetime.

When creating my senior project, I knew I wanted to combine my passions of fashion and women's issues into something palpable. I decided to create a shirt depicting the amount of women raped in the US, using stars to display the prevalence of the problem. Each purple star represents a woman, and each green star represents a rape victim. All proceeds received from this shirt will go to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, which works to improve public policy in regards to rape, educate the public, and assist rape victims with medical costs and legal help.
